Juicing for Health

Beginning a new adventure today...Juicing!
Studies prove juicing detoxes the body, alkalinizes it and helps it heal,
adds light and energy to your cells, hydrates and more!
My first juice came out delicious, full of nature's organic gifts to us!

My combo for today:
Always use organic, wash and leave the peels on for extra nutrients:
1 granny smith apple (lowest sugar of all apples)
1/2 a lime (added a perfect zing to balance the green flavors)
4 stalks of kale
1 whole cucumber
1 celery stalk

Enjoy and please post your favorite juice combos for me to try!

Sugar makes you Stoopid - Back to School Breakfast Ideas

Studies show that sugar makes you stupid! It has been shown to actually impede learning so how about if we NOT give it to our kids before they go to school! (Duh!) Man-made sugars like high fructose corn syrup are the worst culprits and show up in breakfast foods such as cereal, waffles, breads, frozen breakfasts and pretty much all processed food like "pop" tarts. Even the seemingly healthy yogurts, breakfast bars and protein bars are packed with sugar (and other undesireable ingredients like soy and gluten). The "sugar free" ones are no better.  Adding toxic chemical sweeteners to food to make them taste sweet that can cause major side effects is not the answer.

"A new UCLA rat study is the first to show how a diet steadily high in fructose slows the brain, hampering memory and learning — and how omega-3 fatty acids can counteract the disruption. The peer-reviewed Journal of Physiology publishes the findings in its May 15 edition." That doesn't mean you should eat a bunch of junk food and then take omega-3's to counteract it!  It just show how bad this stuff is for you and that you should also be adding healthy fats into your diet to enhance your memory and learning ability.

A couple of years ago an great article came out in the New York Times asking "Is Sugar Toxic?"  The answer?  Emphatically yes. Sugar is also more addictive than cocaine.  It is hard to avoid altogether but staying away from foods with added sugar is in your family's best interest.  Especially with all of the juvenile diabetes and obesity we are seeing.

Here are some great morning ideas for your kids that are well balanced with lots of healthy protein. (and yourself). Make a menu and let your kids help you the night before by selecting what they want the next day.

My house is pretty much gluten free and has been for many years with the exception of the Ezekiel line of breads.  They are sprouted grain and your body doesn't use them like an unsprouted grain, they contain more protein and don't cause blood sugar spikes.  The other breads I like are Paleo Bread (are expensive though) and Deland's bakery makes a great line of millet based breads.  They aren't spouted, however they have only a few ingredients and no sugar added (agave, tapioca or any other sugary syrup are still sugars that are commonly added to breads to act like glue which is usually achieved by adding gluten)

Jewish NEW Yorker: gluten free

Deland millet bagel (onion/garlic is the best one) - best lightly toasted
3 oz Smoked Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon - can be high in sugar so read label carefully or smoke your own (watch out for preservatives)
Nancy's Cultured Cream Cheese  or Kite Hill nondairy almond cheese 2 tbsp
Organic Tomato Slice
Optional  red onion, capers or whatever you like on a bagel and lox

If your family is paleo or grain free try this option instead it's like a sushi roll:

1 small organic cucumber, peeled and sliced down the middle., scoop out the seeds to make a tunnel to put the sandwich fixings in. (use 1/2 of an english cuc)
2 tablespoons cream cheese - 1 tbsp for each half and spread it into each cucumber half
1 strip of nori
3-4 oz Smoked Alaskan Sockeye Salmon to fill sandwich
Avocado slices
Onion or chives (optional)

Dairy free option: Use Kite Hill Almond cream cheese. Very tasty alternative cream cheese not made with soy. The chive one is delicious

Be creative!  You can stuff cucumbers with anything such as hummus, egg salad or tuna and whatever fixings you like.

Power smoothie:
Any plant based, non soy non GMO powder (I love Vega One, Vega Sport, Vega Smoothie or Purium LOVE)
Almond milk - unsweetened organic (While foods brand is great doesn't contain carrageenan)
Stevia to taste
1 tbsp flax oil
1/2 tsp chlorella
1/2 tsp spirulina
Hand full of kale or spinach (optional)
You can substitute water for almond milk to reduce calories and all ice if not using frozen fruit.
Frozen strawberries, blueberries, bananas or whatever you like
Vanilla powders are best with  berries and or banana
Chocolate powders are yummiest will banana and/or nut butters or cherries
I freeze bananas each week and we always stock frozen organic blueberries and strawberries in the freezer.
Add avocado for extra healthy fat

Purple Murple Smoothie

Vanilla Vega One
1 c frozen organic blueberries
stevia to taste
almond milk 10 oz
Flax oil 1 tsp
Probiotics (open up a capsule and dump it in)

Banana Bread Smoothie - I got this one from Vega's recipe blog which has a ton of great recipes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk (increase to 1 1/2 cup for a thinner smoothie)
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 Tbsp chopped walnuts
  • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp allspice, pinch (or two) of sea salt)
  • 1  serving Vega One French Vanilla or Vega Protein & Greens Vanilla
  • Optional: top with more chopped walnuts

Preparation Blend, sip, enjoy!

Egg Muffin Sandwich

Finely chop up your kid's favorite veggies anything from broccoli to pumpkin
grease a muffin tin with coconut oil and fill each cup with veggies.
Beat 8 eggs or use organic whites right out of the container and poor into each muffin cup
You can add cheese shreds as an option
Bake for 10-15 min at 375 - watch closely so they don't burn!
serve by themselves or on an Ezekiel English muffin with ghee. I use Westbrae no sugar ketchup for dipping, pesto is really good with these too.  You can add basil and other herbs in with your veggies to make different flavors. (mushroom pizza would be oregano tomato onion mushroom with garlic powder and mozzarella shreds)

You can serve these egg muffins as a snack on their own. You can also vary this by adding organic feta, goat cheese.

Waffle Sandwich - treat day
A product I really like is Pamela's Pancake Mix.  You can make waffles ahead of time and freeze them and then toast them and make an almond butter or peanut butter and all fruit spread sandwich out of it for a quicker meal use Van's Gluten free non GMO blueberry waffles. They only have 3 g of sugar in 2 waffles as compared to Stonyfield organic greek blueberry yogurt which has 15 g of sugar or Stonyfield Yokids which has 14 g.

Rocky Mountain French Toast
Ezekiel or gluten free bread
Organic eggs
Organic raw butter or ghee
1/2-1 cups of frozen mixed berries (strawberries raspberries and blueberries work best)
Basically you are making french toast using Ezekiel bread.
One beaten egg per slice of bread.
Soak the bread until soggy in the egg.
Put a teaspoon of organic raw butter or ghee in the frying pan on medium to high heat.
Once it melts add the soggy bread.
Lower the heat to medium.
Flip it when the bottom starts browning and then place 1/2 or more of frozen mixed berries around the bread in the pan.  After 1-2 minutes move the bread on top of the berries until they cook all the way. Place the bread on a dish and pour the cooked berries on top.
Optional: Add a tbsp of maple syrup.

Egg in a Frame

Ezekiel, Paleo or Deland's Bread 2 slices
2 organic eggs
Organic butter or ghee
Herbamare seasoned sea salt

Make a hole the size of an egg yolk in the middle of both slices of bread.
Add butter to the pan and heat on medium/high
Add the bread
Crack an egg over the pan so that one yolk lands in each hole and the white overflow onto the bread
Lower heat to medium
When the bottom browns carefully flip them slices over so as not to break the yolk.
Cook for about 2 more minutes but no too long that the yolk cooks through. You want the yolk gooey but the whites cooked.
Place on plate, sprinkle with Herbamare
May also be served with Westbrae no sugar added Ketchup

Check Your Eggs

How many times have you had a minor fender-bender, or a slip on the sidewalk and never gave it a second thought?  Maybe your ego was bruised, but you didn't notice any outward signs of injury.  What happened to you on the inside could be a different story.

After a trauma, things may appear fine on the outside, but it doesn't mean they're OK on the inside.  That's why we open egg cartons and check the contents for hidden damage before we buy them.  The same goes for your spine after any jolt.  What may seem like a minor bump from the outside, could actually create SUBLUXATIONS on the inside.  (Misaligned vertebrae that interfere with nerve function, and silently diminish health)

What's the smart thing to do?  Get your spine checked for SUBLUXATIONS after any trauma, no matter how big or small.  If your kid takes a tumble down the stairs - get them checked.  If your spouse backs the car into a fence post - get them checked.  If you tripped over the dog on the way to the refrigerator last night - get yourself checked too.  Life's tough enough without having to live it SUBLUXATED.

Greater energy, no pain and better sports performance with Chiropractic...

Spike a fever – run for some Tylenol. Get an ear infection – dash for an antibiotic. Big Pharma wants us to race for a drug every time a symptom or illness challenges us. But is it better to let your body run its own race without interference from the drug companies?

Research reported in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology1 found evidence that elevated body temperature helps immune cells work harder to fight colds and the flu – so much for lowering fevers with Tylenol. Still yet another study from the journal Pediatrics2 reports doctors write over 10 million UNNECESSARY prescriptions for antibiotics every year, dangerously raising the risk of antibiotic resistant infections for society as a whole.

Chiropractors acknowledge that symptoms are your body's attempt to save itself… not the start of a 100 yard dash to CVS. Current best practice is to wait for natural responses like fever and inflammation to do their job, instead of 'false starting' with drugs and interfering with what nature knows best.  As long as you're in adjustment (clear Nerve System), your body will innately know how to run its own healing race.

This one is great hot or cold but I like it best cold especially in the summer. Super easy like all my recipes only requires minimal preparation time with lots of flavor. Always choose organic if you have the option. If you are limited by where you live, wash everything thoroughly.

2 lbs organic regular or rainbow carrots for more color (picture shows regular)
2 organic leeks
2-3 knuckles of organic ginger depending on hot "hot" you want it
1-2 tbsp red palm oil or coconut oil - start with 1 and then add if needed after you add the carrots
Himalayan sea salt

Peel carrots and shred in a food processor
Removed woody part of leek and chop the rest
Peel ginger and throw in food processor with carrot

Heat 1 tbsp red palm oil on medium to high heat and add leeks, lower to medium, stirring until soft.
Add carrots and ginger mixing in the oil - add more oil if carrots are sticking
Add sea salt to taste
Cover and cook for about 10 -12 minutes on medium heat and mix a few times to saturate the carrots with oil

Let cool then chill in the fridge
Enjoy!

10 Things You Can Do To Help Our Planet Without Sacrificing Your Current Lifestyle

Happy Earth Day!  Here are 10 things you can do to help our planet without sacrificing your current lifestyle! By Dr. Nicole Rothman www.DrNicole.com

1. For any product you use, make it a non-toxic one and choose brands that use recycled materials for their packaging. Everything we spray, wash or clean with gets into our air, water and soil. You're going to buy laundry detergent, body wash and cleaning supplies, might as well choose greener ones.
2. Bring your own bags when you go shopping - especially food shopping. Most of these reusable bags cost about $1. Most of mine I have gotten free from various companies promoting themselves. Put them right back in your trunk so you always have them for the next time you go shopping. If you forget and get plastic bags in the store, make sure to recycle them.  Next time you go shopping bring them with you and drop them off to be recycled, most stores have a drop-off right near their entrance.
3. Recycle and reuse anything you possibly can! Most communities make it easy for us and even provide free recycling bins. Make it a rule in your home and kids love helping with this. Reuse glass bottles and jars for food storage instead of plasticware. No need to throw these away! They can even be used as a flower vase! Don't throw things away that can be donated to a local charity. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Get creative.
4. Water your plants with leftover water from cooking or unfinished cups of water. Find small ways to conserve water in your home. The water you save can really add up! Many studies show it is actually healthier to shower every other day rather than every day.  This conserves tons of water a year.  Make sure to wash the body parts that release toxins daily - you know which ones they are - underarms, groin...
5. Don't litter.  We would think everyone knew this by now but people constantly throw garbage out of their car windows, including gum.  There is a fast food restaurant near our office and I am shocked to see people actually leaving their garbage right in our parking lot. Try your best to leave things in their natural state (not just the beach - even parking lots should be unlittered!)
6. Make your own water instead of buying bottles of water.  Get reusable glass or BPA free plastic water bottles and fill them daily with your own water system. www.water-revolution.com/drnicolewater for great ways to make your own water in you home - making your own water save tons of money too and is healthier than any water you can buy in a bottle. Water bottles are a major problem for our landfills. Please recycle them if you do use them.
7. Purchase from companies that care about sustainable practices. If you were to choose between 2 types of chips for example, pick the one who grows all of their food sustainably and that truly cares about human health. Sustainable farming matters and so does buying food in it's most natural state- not man-made.  So GMOs are a bigtime NO. Organic is best for you and our planet too! Pick local if you can familiarize yourself with the local farm that you are getting your produce from. Sustainable farming practice are gentler to the earth. Supporting those companies is a great way to help our planet.
8. Stop wearing perfume!  Perfume contains synthetic chemicals and is toxic to you and everyone you come into contact with.  It is a pollutant to our planet. Switch to essential oils.  There are great businesses that will even mix your own custom scent just for you! This may be a bit of a lifestyle change if you are used to dousing yourself everyday but worth the switch.  Perfumes are known to disrupt your hormones, have been connected to headaches and even cancer. Just like second hand smoke from a cigarette, you impact our air quality and also affect the people around you.
9. Choose a non-toxic mulch for your yard. Buy ones made without chemicals and dyes. Earth friendly eucalyptus mulch even wards off bugs naturally.
10.  Pick plants for your home that do well in your region's environment and therefore require less water and care.  Here in florida, orchid and bromeliads and great for beautifying and never need to be watered because they live off the humidity in the air. Most of them come in a lovely planter so you don't even need to plant them! I like to tie them to my palm trees.  Once they attach themselves to the tree you can remove the twine. Plants create oxygen for us and help replenish our ozone layer. Plant as many as you can!

HAPPY EARTH DAY!
